Dr Mariano Mascarenhas

Dr Mariano Mascarenhas journey in the NHS started when he joined the Leeds Fertility team in 2014 as a clinical fellow / specialty registrar. He trained in India and completed a fellowship in reproductive medicine at the Christian Medical College, Vellore.

He has a passion for research and strives to apply this knowledge to evidence-based care for men and women having fertility treatment. He has collaborated in performing systematic reviews of the scientific literature to assess the safety and efficacy of fertility treatment and he is involved with the Cochrane collaboration.  He has contributed to the British Fertility Society paper on recurrent implantation failure in IVF.

Dr Mascarenhas research projects have included assessing the efficacy and safety of EmbryoScope incubators and the influence of ethnicity on IVF outcomes. His clinical interests include 3D transvaginal ultrasound scanning (for uterine assessment after recurrent miscarriages or failed IVF cycles), HyCoSy for testing the fallopian tubes and fertility preservation strategies for men and women having cancer treatment which could affect their fertility. He is also interested in sperm donation programmes and has written the British Fertility Society information leaflet guiding children conceived through sperm donation on information they can access about their donors.
